Film Editing Mastery
Phase 1: The Foundation
Week 02 of 52 · Day 8–14

The Grammar of Editing

Learning Objective

Understand the fundamental vocabulary — the cut, dissolve, wipe, and fade.

This Week

Every transition in film carries meaning. A hard cut implies continuity or contrast. A dissolve implies the passage of time or a dreamlike connection. A fade to black signals an ending. This week, you will study these transitions not as technical options but as narrative tools. Watch five scenes from different films and identify every transition used, asking yourself: why did the editor choose this transition here?

Daily Practice

Practice applying different transitions to the same sequence of shots and observe how the meaning and feeling changes. (30–45 min)

Weekly Challenge

Edit the same 90-second sequence twice: once with only hard cuts, once with only dissolves. Write a paragraph comparing the two versions.
